UV Technology in the Printing and Coating Industry in Europe

Current knowledge of epidemiology still seems insufficient to confirm whether this technology is more or less dangerous than the use of conventional printing and coating formulations.  UV Technology will not cause health problems providing the safety proposals from the UV Protocol, regarding technical equipment and handling of printing inks and coatings, are correctly and carefully applied.

Updating Your Clarke OBS Floor Sander

Dust control improvement for the 18″ Clarke-American OBS Sander, while tuning up my unit a local expert suggested retrofitting it to accept a dust control “skirt” that’s an option on newer units. It’s a hard plastic border that fits around the business end of the sander, with bristles toward the floor & a bag that seals around the lower sanding unit. Cost $250. I also bought an extra vacuum bag for $13 as the original wore through in a spot. I’ll keep an extra in the job trailer, just in case…

ASHES 2010 Midwest Regional Conference

United Floor Care exhibits at the 2010 Midwest Regional ASHES Conference in Dubuque, Iowa this April by representatives from Performance Finish and Performance Floors.  Kevin Lind, Ben Spencer and Chris Haring hosted breakfast and spoke with industry leaders about the growing interest in water-based aliphatic urethane floor finishes.  Additionally, United Floor Care spoke about environmental concerns in healthcare and other hard-surface floor care issues.

National ASHES will be coming up in November 2010.  United Floor Care will be exhibiting.

Library Ceramic Tile

A certified United Floor Care affiliate recently inspected the ceramic floors it completed four years ago at one of its client locations.  The library has received very little reapplication and, in fact, received no reapplications at all for more than one year.  The library staff simply sweep the floors and occationally mop the floors when lots of snow gets tracked into the lobby.  Take a look at the gloss after a full year of heavy foot traffic.

Clearly, the library has benefited financially from the reduced labor and materials costs involved in maintaining their ceramic tile floors.  In fact, they are exceedingly satisfied with the high gloss and long-term durability of United Floor Care floor finish.

Bathroom grout and tile maintenance

Grout and ceramic tile maintenance has been considered a burden for many housekeepers in various industries (healthcare, hospitality, office buildings, residential, etc.).  Cleaning most floors takes some effort, but successfully cleaning grout lines and textured tiles is difficult and time-consuming work.  United Floor Care is taking that burden out of our customers’ hands.  We have developed a maintenance system that keeps grout lines and tiles looking fresh and clean, even in high traffic public restrooms.

Urethane on Vertical Walls

We installed urethane finish on vertical ceramic tile restroom walls in seven Houston area medical clinics. The client requested the installation both as a grout sealant and to even out the fresh, “just cleaned,” glossy look.

Wesley Life – Halcyon House

The management team at Wesley Life – Halcyon House senior care facility in Washington, Iowa have turned to the expertise of United Floor Care affiliates to create a long-term low-maintenance floor care system, which guards against contaminants, is highly abrasion resistant, and remains glossy without the constant need for buffing, burnishing, stripping, top coating, etc.  Halcyon House offers a variety of retirement options, including independent living and assisted living.   They have expanded to include a 1,500 sqft fitness center, a coffee shop with internet access, massage therapy, game rooms, and the new Applewood Bistro.  Quality is important to the staff and residents of the Halcyon House senior care facility, and their floor care system provided by United Floor Care shares the same sentiment.

Concrete sealant program

There are many retail products that claim to seal concrete and last for years, however, most tend to flake off after the first sign of high-traffic.  Concrete sealants, when applied by the layperson, often loose adhesion, flake, or bubble and can sometimes have varied texture throughout the application area.

United Floor Care has been preparing and sealing concrete for years with the best quality commercial grade sealants specifically formulated for concrete.  We have successfully sealed concrete areas throughout the United States including: warehouses, factories, shipping & receiving docks, and even garages.  Most of our residential garage floor customers have preferred the stylish look of colorful flecks over their newly tinted floor.  Wow, some cars sure do have it made.

Depending upon the application, our concrete sealing program can take one day or up to three days for the ultimate luxury floors that end up publicized in magazines.  Ask about it from your local United Floor Care expert or feel free to comment on your experiences on this blog.

Why Floors Matter!

Last March, (spring 2009), my partner Ben Spencer and I attended a regional ASHES conference, (American Society for Healthcare Environmental Services), in Dubuque, Ia.  Our company, Performance Finish Incorporated was one of a number of vendors that shook hands with, ate breakfast with, and swapped in-the-trenches stories with,  EVS attendees from a (3) state area which included Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois.  Our presence ostensibly was intended to highlight our out-sourcing services in the way of new floor care products and services; primarily our aliphatic, water-based, urethane treatment to hard surface floors like VCT, sheet vinyl goods, techno-flooring, etc.  New technologies and new operational methods implemented by PFI during the past several years were discussed but most important was the feedback that we received from the contingent of EVS personnel regarding their own unique challenges in todays economically strained environment.  Bear in mind the scope of responsibilities for these leaders is enormous.  On any given day, they are asked to wear many different hats and ALWAYS offer the first line of defense for infection prevention in their hospitals.  Pharmaceutical waste issues, hand sanitizers, safety concerns, air quality control management, etc., etc., are all part of the tasks that these people face every day, 7 days a week.  And yet, when I asked them individually, or in a group setting, “what is your biggest challenge?”…..almost unanimously they answered…”FLOORS!”  Keeping floors clean and shiny was a priority for each of them, yet most agreed that they lacked the manpower to do the job effectively.  In spite of budget cuts, staffing shortages, hiring freezes and so on, these managers are asked to make sure that the first impression that hospital visitors receive upon entering their facility is a clean, shiny floor.  That job is made much more difficult with fewer FTE’s available to do the traditional wax, buff, strip, recoat methodology.   More and more EVS managers are asking for a solution that can allow them  to keep pace with the variety of jobs and tasks required of them, and still maintain good looking floors.   Most agreed during our “conferencing” that a clean floor reflects a clean hospital and the axiom holds true in the negative as well.  When patients see an unkept floor, it reflects poorly on the hospital and can actually affect bottom line revenues.  Outsourcing floor work is an option that many EVS managers now see as a good option, especially when a cost benefit analysis can be shown to save hospitals money and provide a better looking floor surface every day.  That is a winnable proposition for both contractor and hospital and one that will be around well into the future.   New technologies for longer lasting, environmentally safe, urethane floor coatings, grout restoration techniques, diamond grinding marble flooring, and training/consultation are seen as a great value to EVS managers, and contractors that can provide these services will find a wealth of opportunities within this industry.

2-hour dry time urethane

Two United Floor Care operational Directors, through their years of experience and millions of square feet of successful installation of high performance urethanes, were invited by a high profile urethane manufacturer to have the first look at a 2 hour, very durable, high gloss water based urethane.   Our Directors worked with this new coating and offered feedback on ways to improve and continue development.  United Floor Care is very excited to have had the opportunity to take part in the research and development of industry changing floor finishes.  A true pat on the back for the credibility we have earned with such a highly respected manufacturer.

Environmental issues with floor care chemicals

Maybe you’ve relied on a trusted janitorial service for years. Your offices are spotless, but the conventional cleaners being used aren’t in keeping with your green goals. Or you’re in the market for a new janitorial service and have your sights set on one that’s already up-to-speed on best green practices and products. Either way, using a service that relies on eco-friendly cleaners not only wards off injuries among custodial workers, but also improves your office’s air quality and leaves waterways cleaner.

Retail; high-traffic

Retail traffic has traditionally been difficult on any floor finish.  Vendors are often not careful when dragging two-wheel carts or scratching floor finishes with heavy boxes.  United Floor Care understands these obstacles and has solutions.  Not only does United Floor Care promote quality floor finishes that stand up to the demands of retail traffic, but they also stand by their products with a guarantee.

United Floor Care urethane found to withstand pet claws

Veterinary clinics throughout the United States are benefiting from United Floor Care’s urethane floor finish solutions. Pet claws have traditionally dug deep into acrylic wax products, while our urethane has continuously withstood these extreme traffic conditions. A Vet clinic in Des Moines, Iowa has enjoyed years of low-maintenance floors and attests to the highly abrasion resistant attributes of a urethane regimen.

Iowa State Government taking action

Iowa State Government facilities managers taking action to reduce costs as well as consider environmental issues. Floor care directives helping to recover lost expenses. Performance Finish Incorporated, a United Floor Care affiliate, working with State officials to improve quality standards and effectively reduce overall floor care costs.

3+ years before any reapplication

United Floor Care has a client that benefited from the long-lasting qualities of our urethane floor finish. For 3+ years, this hospital saved thousands on labor, chemicals, and time down in their Pediatric department, while still enjoying a high gloss, low-maintenance, extremely chemical resistant floor. We are now reapplying a second coat of urethane to, hopefully, give our customer another 3 years of beautiful floors.
